Approaching a potential romantic interest can be difficult but use these six methods to break the ice.

One of the hardest things to do in the dating world is approaching an attractive stranger. For many people, making the first move is uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing, but at the same time if you see somebody you like across the bar or down the street, it doesn't make sense to just let them go. Instead of letting yourself succumb to your own internal pressures, why not try one of these six ways to approach somebody new:

  1. Start off with a compliment. It's relatively easy once you get the hang of it. Start the conversation by complimenting someone for their clothes, hair, or skill--just make sure it's something unique and not generic like "I love your eyes."

  • Ask what brings them. Find out why your potential new contact is visiting the event. It's a simple question that opens the door to a wider conversation.
  • Tell a surprising joke. It can lighten the mood immediately, and even if you fail at telling it, you can recover by poking fun at the situation.
  • Ask their opinion of the venue. You can easily find out something about their personality and personal preferences with a simple, non-invasive question.
  • Point out something about the environment. Make a comment about the music that's playing, or about the weather if you're outside. Find something that both of you can relate to.
  • Simply offer your name. It sounds a lot more awkward than it actually is. Simply go up to someone and introduce yourself! Let them take the conversation from there.
  • Try these out on many people, not just potential romantic interests. You never know when a great friendship could strike up!
