Police Officer Believes Ghost Is Haunting Station (VIDEO)

The police station is Espanola, New Mexico, is set up with state-of-the-art gates and alarms designed to keep out intruders, but the security measures don't seem to be doing a good job of scaring away ghostly trespassers.

On Saturday night, Officer Karl Romero was keeping an eye on surveillance cameras around the station when he spotted something strange in the sally port, or secured entryway.

"At first I thought it was a podilla -- a fly or moth -- then I saw the legs ... and it was a human," he told KOAT TV. "But not a real human. No, a ghost."

The surveillance video of the incident shows a blurry bright, white figure walking across the gated area at night, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Romero reported the spooky sighting to his superiors. Some, like Detective Solomon Romero, agreed a ghost could be the only possible explanation.

Romero told the station there is no way in or out of the secured area without the gates opening and an alarm sounding.

In addition, other detectives have heard strange noises and seen unexplained images in the lobby of the building, too.

“I do believe in ghosts," Romero told KOAT TV. "I don’t know (what exactly was on the video), but we’ve had some unsolved murders in the area."

However, the police station is not built on an Indian burial ground, he said.

Officers may be willing to believe the strange video shows a ghost, but paranormal investigator Bryan Bonner of the Rocky Mountain Paranormal Research Society isn't impressed.

"That has to be one of the worst videos that I have seen," he told HuffPost by email. "The image appears to have been caused by a small insect (possibly a small spider) crawling on the plastic case that houses the lens."

Bonner said that the fact the police are reporting this alleged ghost sighting may make it seem credible, but says law enforcement officers are given little training in analyzing "ghost" videos.

"Because of that they fall back on the same biases as most people and jump the the conclusion that if they cannot explain it it has to be a ghost, when it is very easy to explain."

Before You Go

Unexplained Noises
Destination America
Normal houses have settling noises that come from the ceiling, but haunted homes often have weird knocking or banging sounds emanating from the closet, floor or basement.
Household Items Move
Ghosts have been known to move around things like keys and books to other places in the house. The choice of items seems to be random.
Bizarre Shadows
Destination America
"Rogue shadows" are different than normal shadows, looking more like static off a TV screen. Also look for dark spectres, outlines, black masses, and menacing silhouettes.
Strange Behavior From Kids Or Pets
Be very aware of your child's so-called imaginary friends: They might be entities trying to harm them. Also, take notice if your normally well-behaved child starts doing mean things or has sudden crying jags.
Feeling Of Being Watched
Destination America
All alone in your condo but don't feel quite alone? Sure, it could be the NSA, but it also could mean that ghosts are watching you watch TV.
Terrifying (And Recurring) Dreams
Terrifying dreams that reoccur can be a sign that you're being haunted. The mind is supposedly more receptive to paranormal entitites when asleep.
Electronic Devices Spontaneously Turn On
Destination America
Ghosts apparently get their jollies turning on water faucets or running appliances willy-nilly. TVs and blenders are common devices affected. Sadly, most warranties do not cover items damaged by paranormal activity.
Unexplained Writings
Destination America
Ghosts have been known to write on walls. Sometimes they will scribble the name of someone or a simple "Get out!"
