Nathan Deal Defeats Jason Carter In Georgia Gubernatorial Race

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) defeated Democrat Jason Carter in Tuesday's hotly contested gubernatorial race, CNN projected.

Deal, who was first elected in 2011, faced an ethics investigation based on allegations that members of his staff tamped down a state investigation of his campaign finances. Deal was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, but he switched to the Republican Party in 1995 to run for governor in the conservative-leaning state.

Deal's opponent was the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, a household name in the state of Georgia. In 2010, the younger Carter won a special election to a seat in the Georgia state Senate.
