West Virginia Senate Election Results: Shelley Moore Capito Is State's First Female Senator

Capito Wins West Virginia Senate Election

Republican Shelley Moore Capito defeated Democrat Natalie Tennant in the U.S. Senate race in West Virginia, according to The Associated Press.

Capito, who has served in Congress since being elected to the House of Representatives in 2001, is the first woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate from the Mountain State. She is the daughter of former West Virginia Gov. Arch Moore.

Tennant, the West Virginia secretary of state, is a former television reporter who had an unsuccessful run for governor in 2011, losing in the Democratic primary to current Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

Capito will replace retiring Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D).
