Students at the University of Virginia are banding together in grief to remember Yeardley Love, the senior lacrosse player who was allegedly killed Monday by her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely, as new details emerge about the suspect's history.
According to reports on the Today Show (video below), friends of the former couple say that Huguely tried to attack Love in public just weeks ago. Police are also investigating claims that Huguely may have threatened Love via text message.
Huguely was known for being "aggressive when he drank." In 2008, he was arrested and shocked with a stun gun after a violent encounter with a police officer.
Huguely admitted yesterday to shaking Love, causing her head to bang against a wall repeatedly. Friends and neighbors of Huguely's are shocked by his arrest, saying the UVA senior was "polite as can be."
Both of UVA's lacrosse teams have decided to finish their seasons in dedication to Love, the Cavalier Daily reports:
The two teams reportedly met Monday to discuss the possibility of canceling their seasons because of the tragedy, as players on both squads undoubtedly have been affected by the incident."A part of their healing will be getting our students back into some of their routines. In the case of the women's and men's programs, our lacrosse teams will honor Yeardley by continuing their seasons. We anticipate both teams will be selected for the NCAA Tournaments and they will represent the University of Virginia as they always have," [athletic director Colin] Littlepage said in the statement.
On Tuesday, the lacrosse team at Love's high school, Notre Dame Prep in Baltimore, won its last regular-season match. The players wore orange bows in their hair in honor of Love.
Students at UVA and beyond have been commemorating Love's life. Tonight, there will be a candelight vigil on campus in honor of Love, UVA Student Council President Colin Hood announced in a letter to students.
Towson junior Courtney Guidera, who went to high school with Love, gave the Towson Towerlight a remembrance of her former schoolmate:
"She was very outgoing," Guidera said. "She was very bubbly. Her smile was contagious; she was always smiling. You never really saw Yeardley without a smile on her face. She was very down to earth and everyone loved her."
On the Today Show this morning, Love's classmate said that UVA will bestow her degree upon her at the school's graduation ceremony later this month.
