The matriarch of the "Duck Dynasty" clan is opening up about her family's history in a new interview, revealing that her first son was born out of official wedlock.
Kay Robertson discusses her wedding to Phil Robertson and first pregnancy with son, Alan, in the "Duck Dynasty" collector's issue of Us Weekly. Kay and Phil Robertson apparently said their church vows in 1964 when she was 16 years old, but the two were not legally married until 1968.
"Well, this is the first time I've shared this, aside from giving my testimony [in church]. When I made a vow to God and to [Phil], it was March 22, 1964," she said. "It wasn't legal. That's the truth. We didn't do the legal papers until April 11, 1968, after Alan, my oldest, was born. Alan says, 'Yeah, I would be the B [bastard] in the family.'"
Alan Robertson is the eldest of the four "Duck Dynasty" sons.
"Now, the family laughs about it," she added. "People ask, 'When was your mama's wedding?' and the boys say, 'Which, the pioneer wedding or the regular wedding?'"
Last December, Phil Robertson finally gave his bride a wedding ring after more than 50 years of marriage.
While Kay Robertson's comments relate to her own marital status, Phil Robertson has made some public remarks about the institution overall. Earlier this year, a video clip surfaced in which he says men should marry girls when they are 15 or 16 years old. In 2013, he told his church congregation, "If you’re a man, find yourself a woman, marry them and keep your sex right there" following a controversial anti-gay GQ interview.
