Quinn Shuffles State Budget To Prevent Cuts From Mine Safety Program After West Virginia Disaster

Gov. Pat Quinn plans to shuffle the state budget to make sure coal mine safety programs aren't cut because of the state's massive financial problems.

Under his proposed spending plan, the state's mine safety program appears to receive a 33 percent reduction in funding. But, the $2 million cut would be replaced by transferring money out of a coal-related program administered by a different state agency.

The transfer will keep mine safety programs operating at current levels, but will result in a reduction in grants for coal industry promotion, officials say.
