The New Jersey legislative committee investigating the George Washington Bridge scandal tied to Gov. Chris Christie (R) has issued four subpoenas for oral testimony, according to reports Tuesday.
The committee served Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak, Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye, Port Authority board of commissioners member William Schuber and Christina Renna, who worked under Christie's former deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly, CNN reported.
Though the panel had previously issued dozens of subpoenas for documents and information in its ongoing investigation into the 2013 lane closures that caused major traffic problems at the George Washington Bridge, the subpoenas announced Tuesday are the first for oral testimony. Drewniak, Foye, Schuber and Renna were all served in previous rounds of subpoenas.
In a statement obtained by CNN, the investigative committee's co-chairs, state Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D) and Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D), said the subpoenas indicate a new phase in their investigation.
"With these subpoenas for testimony, the joint committee is moving to a key stage of its investigation into how this abuse of government power and threat to public safety occurred," Weinberg and Wisniewski said.
Last week, Wisniewski said the committee has not ruled out serving Christie a subpoena in the investigation.
"At the time [I was first asked that], I said I was not ruling anyone out," he said. "But that doesn't mean he's being called to testify."
