Student Loan Bill Hits Snag, Gets Sent Back To House (UPDATED)

Student Loan Bill Hits Snag, Gets Sent Back To House (UPDATED)

UPDATE: The bill passed the Senate, 56-43, and the House, 220-207.

The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act is headed back to the House of Representatives today.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Senate Republicans found two minor violations in the reconciliation bill, one related to student loans:

Some 16 lines of text will be removed from the 153-page bill. One provision is technical and has no substantive value, and the other is about a measure to protect Pell grant awards from fluctuations in the federal budget.

The Washington Post reports that the bill's re-passage in the house should not be a problem:

The corrected legislation most likely will not be subjected to additional challenges when it is sent back to the House, Democratic staffers said. House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) said in a statement that if the Senate passes the reconciliation bill in a final vote Thursday afternoon, as expected, the House will take up the corrected bill Thursday evening.
