Ivan Lopez Identified As Suspected Fort Hood Shooter By Officials

Fort Hood Shooter Identified

Ivan Lopez has been identified as the suspected gunman in the deadly shooting at Fort Hood on Wednesday, according to U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas).

McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said the shooting happened in a medical building on the Texas army post, according to the Associated Press.

A Pentagon official also identified the suspect as Lopez, according to the New York Times.

Lopez wore an Army uniform during the incident, according to other statements McCaul made in the Washington Post. The news organization confirmed Lopez as the suspected gunman with "multiple government sources."

At a Fort Hood press conference on Wednesday night, Lt. Gen. Mark Milley provided more information about the suspected shooter, although he declined to identify him. The Army has a policy of withholding the names of slain soldiers for 24 hours after their next of kin has been informed of a death, he said.

The suspected shooter had served four months in Iraq in 2011, according to Milley, and was undergoing treatment here for "depression, anxiety and other psychological and psychiatric issues."

The gunman was a newcomer to Fort Hood, having been transferred there in February.

A motive had not yet been established. Milley said there was "no indication" of terrorism and promised a thorough probe of the shooter's background and combat experience.

Besides the gunman, who allegedly took his own life, three other members of the military were killed and 16 were injured, according to Milley.
