Blanca Villanueva-Sanchez And 1-Year-Old Killed Trying To 'Beat' Metra Train: Metra Releases VIDEO Of Incident

On Saturday, a 34-year-old woman carrying her 1-year-old goddaughter attempted to run across Metra tracks to beat an oncoming train in North Chicago. Both were killed, and on Wednesday Metra released video footage of the family running across the tracks as warning bells and lights went off and the train's horn blared.

Blanca Villanueva-Sanchez died at the scene, and 1-year-old Maria Cruz was pronounced dead at a Waukegan hospital about three hours later, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller told the Chicago Tribune.

Villanueva-Sanchez was carrying the child about 9 a.m. when she and her family attempted to cross the tracks as a train approached. Villanueva-Sanchez's husband Gonzalo Alvarran Flores made it across in time, and told the Chicago Sun-Times they thought the train was going to stop at the station when the incident occurred.

The haunting footage released Wednesday by Metra is meant to serve as a warning to people who think they can "beat" a train.

"Seeing this video is very bone-chilling," Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet told NBC Chicago. "It's very startling, but it also reminds us that there are only a few seconds to get across the track when the train is coming. It's literally a matter of life and death, sadly."

Passenger John Hill told the Tribune he heard the engineer cry out, "No, no, no. Oh my God," and then the train hit something. The train had been traveling 70 MPH and it takes the length of five football fields to stop them, though the engineer did hit the brake.

"We really feel for the families of both the victims and the engineer," Hill told the Tribune. He was traveling with his family when the incident occurred.
