Hwansan Sunim, Korean Buddhist Monk, Explains How Meditation Can Help You Deal With Difficult Emotions

WATCH: The Simple, Ancient Practice That Can Help You Deal With Pain and Loss

How do you react when you get upset or hurt? In spite of all the coping methods we learn in the course of our lives -- from our parents, from experts, and from our own instincts -- according to Korean Buddhist monk Hwansan Sunim, we are still, as individuals and a society, far from understanding how to deal with distress.

"In all of our education, we are never taught a concrete, specific way for dealing with being upset," says Sunim.

Sunim, a disciple of Korean zen master Songdam, has spent the past 25 years studying the Seon Buddhist meditation practice at Yonghwasa Temple in Incheon, South Korea. Through his YouTube videos, Sunim now shares the principles of Seon Buddhism and philosophy, tailored for a modern global audience. In the second video in his YouTube series, Sunim shares the teachings of Seon Buddhism when it comes to dealing with loss and heartache.

To find out what Seon Buddhism has to say about dealing with difficult emotions, watch the full video above.
