I came to love Muenster cheese in the way I came to love a lot of foods -- because of my dad. By some hereditary genetic superiority (or flaw, or whatever you want to call it) I pretty much refused to eat anything but grilled cheese for breakfast for most of my young life. My dad, as the only morning person in the house, was charged with making roughly 3,000 breakfast grilled cheeses for me from ages 4 to 10. He would grill me a cheese, then sit down at the table with me, a newspaper, his black coffee and a hunk of whatever cheese was leftover from the morning's sandwich. More often than not, that cheese was Muenster. Whether that was because I liked it best or he liked it best will have to remain a mystery.
I know some of you think that Muenster cheese is rubbery, tasteless, boring supermarket cheese not worth a second thought. I know some of you are crying out, "BUT YOU MUST TRY TRUE AUTHENTIC MUNSTER CHEESE." (I have, and I think we both know they have very little to do with one another.) I am here today to tell you that you are wrong, and that you've been missing out on 15 opportunities to put more Muenster cheese on everything.
