Bachmann: This Is Not 'The Time To Fight' The Debt Ceiling

As the House GOP stands divided on how to reach a debt ceiling deal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) looks to be among the Republicans against picking a battle.

In an interview with the Washington Post published Wednesday, Bachmann conceded that current negotiations should stress "pragmatism" over struggle.

“There is a pragmatism here,” Bachmann told the Post. “You’ve got to know when to hold them and when to fold them. My assessment is that most of us don’t think it’s the time to fight.”

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) appears to be in the same camp as Bachmann, saying Tuesday that the goal was to "increase the debt ceiling."

"Nobody wants to default on our debt," Boehner said, according to the AP. "But while we're doing this, we ought to do something about keeping jobs in the economy, about the drivers of our debt."

Bachmann and Boehner's remarks arrive amid a Monday warning from Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, urging Congress to increase the debt limit. After Friday, Feb. 7, Lew said he will resort to using emergency measures to prevent the nation's first-ever default on its debt. Lew added that those emergency options will likely run dry by the end of February.
