Brian Boitano, Olympic Gold Medalist, On The Day He Found His Calling (VIDEO)

Recognize This Olympic Gold Medal Skater?

For Brian Boitano, skating was a calling.

The gold medal Olympian recently spoke with "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" about his childhood fascination with ice skating and the fateful day that sparked his love of the sport.

"When I was 7 years old, my mom took me to the Ice Follies," Boitano recalls. "From that day, I went home and I knew that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."

The moment he got on the ice, Boitano was hooked. "When I went the very first day to skate on the public session with my dad, he was literally on the rail, holding on... and I was lapping him. I was like, 'Dad! I'm having fun! Oh my God, hey, Dad! Hey, Dad!'" Boitano says.

Though he initially couldn't pinpoint why he was so fascinated, Boitano now believes he was attracted to the combined feeling of speed and power. "I think it was the speed -- you know, the wind against your face because you travel so fast and fling yourself in the air. Fly for a couple seconds and land on a thin blade. That feeling of power and feeling of control that you had was just intoxicating to me as a kid," he says.

Boitano also admits that he still can't believe his love of skating led him to win Olympic gold. "I still... sometimes go, 'Wow, I won an Olympic gold medal,'" he says. "It's unbelievable."

In the above video, Boitano reveals where he keeps that gold medal and confesses that, to his disappointment, it's not exactly in mint condition.

"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
