The hype surrounding Sheryl Sandberg's best-selling book "Lean In" will continue now that Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to the Facebook COO's 2013 female-empowerment sensation.
Deadline.com reports that the adaptation of "Lean In: Women, Work, And The Will to Lead" will not be a biopic of Sandberg; instead it will revolve around the themes presented in the book and the movement it inspired. That means you can start brainstorming plots based on chapter titles like "It's a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder," "Don't Leave Before You Leave" and "Let's Start Talking About It."
"Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" creator and "Lean In" co-writer Nell Scovell will pen the script. Scovell's other TV-writing credits include "The Simpsons," "Murphy Brown," "Charmed" and "NCIS." Like Sandberg, she is a graduate of Harvard College.
Sony has not yet announced details regarding a director, cast or release date. Meanwhile, "Lean In" is enjoying its 43rd week on The New York Times Best Seller list, where it currently sits at No. 6. A boost in sales is expected if the movie attracts even a modicum of the attention received by the book.
"Lean In" is hardly the first self-help book to get the movie treatment. Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel's pregnancy bible, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," and Steve Harvey's relationship manifesto, "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," both hit the big screen in 2012. Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo's "He's Just Not That Into You" featured an all-star cast in 2009, and Rosalind Wiseman's "Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughters Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence" (you know it better as "Mean Girls") was brought to life in 2004.
Proceeds from the movie will reportedly go to the Lean In Foundation, which is "committed to offering women the ongoing inspiration and support to help them achieve their goal."
