Brian Stelter: Media May Have 'Overreacted To The Attacks In Boston'

Brian Stelter knew that his argument would not go over well before he even said it during "CNN Newsroom" on Friday.

"This might be an unpopular opinion," the CNN host began.

Stelter questioned the media's role in reporting on the Boston Marathon bombing, arguing that news outlets may have "overreacted" to the attack.

"I wonder if the press overall in retrospect overreacted to the attacks in Boston," he said. "It was a very scary week. I was scared along with the rest of the country."

Initial news reports following the bombing in April were rife with incorrect and misleading information, most notably involving repeated false identifications of the suspects. Stelter's comments followed a conversation on the show about how media reports can shape public opinion. "Newsroom" anchor Carol Costello noted that this type of conflicting coverage "is not going to change" in the future.

"In retrospect, I wonder if there was an overreaction in the press because ... considering the relatively low number of deaths and injuries," Stelter continued. "Because the word 'terrorism' was applied, I think there may have been an overreaction for that reason."
