Paul Rudd Cast As Ant-Man [UPDATE]

Paul Rudd Is Playing Ant-Man

UPDATE: Marvel has confirmed that Paul Rudd will play Ant-Man in Edgar Wright's upcoming "Ant-Man."

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," Marvel's Kevin Feige said in a statement announcing the move. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we'd ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn't be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."

It was initially reported that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rudd were the top contenders to play Ant-Man. Wright's film will arrive in theaters on July 31, 2015.

The original story continues below.

Paul Rudd has been cast as Ant-Man in Marvel's "Ant-Man," this according to a report from TheWrap. Rudd was first attached to the Edgar Wright film in October, when Variety reported that the 44-year-old "Anchorman 2" star and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were the top two contenders for the part, but his rumored involvement dates all the way back to February's Oscar ceremony.

HuffPost Entertainment contacted Rudd's representatives for confirmation on the report from TheWrap; this post will be updated if they respond. For his part, however, the star has been in denial mode when it comes to "Ant-Man," recently telling a radio interviewer that the story was "all rumors." Wright, who is active on Twitter and has posted since news of Rudd's casting broke late Wednesday, has not commented either.

As Deadline.com notes, Marvel really wanted Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the part, but he decided to make "Sandman" for Warner Bros.

"Ant-Man" is due in theaters on July 31, 2015. For more on Rudd's casting, head to TheWrap.
