Casey Neistat Spent $25,000 Of 20th Century Fox's Money On Philippines Typhoon Relief

What This Filmmaker Did With A Big Movie Studio Check Is Wondrous

Unlike Walter Mitty, Casey Neistat is living his dreams.

The 32-year-old filmmaker and viral mastermind was recently given $25,000 by 20th Century Fox to make a promotional video for Fox's upcoming movie, "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," which stars Ben Stiller and is based on a famous short story from the 1930s.

"[Fox] wanted me to make a movie about chasing a dream," Neistat said on YouTube. "I am a big dreamer but at that time only one thing came to mind; if [I] could do anything in the world right now what would it be? [T]hat's to help the victims of the typhoon."

So Neistat proposed to Fox that he take the $25,000 to the Philippines, where Typhoon Haiyan struck in early November, killing at least 6,000 people and causing untold damage.

The company agreed. Three days later, Neistat was there. With the help of his best friend (Neistat did not bring a film crew), he launched his own typhoon relief effort, bringing food and other relief supplies to the citizens of Tacloban, a major Philippine city that was virtually leveled by the storm.

According to Neistat, Fox was pleased with his efforts. "I wasn't dealing with the entire studio, I was dealing with one single open-minded person on their marketing team," Neistat told The Huffington Post in an email. "When I sent her the finished video, she simply replied, 'It made me cry.'"
