To find a cure for what ails her, Malina Woodbury is taking matters into her own hands.
The 9-year-old, from New Lebanon, N.Y., has tirelessly raised research funds for Neurofibromatosis Type 1, a genetic disorder that has left one of her legs severely bent. And if she has her way, the disorder will soon be a thing of the past.
"I just wanted to find a cure so other kids don't have to suffer with it," Malina told News 10. "When I get older, if they find a cure, hopefully my kids won't have to suffer with it either."
According to Johns Hopkins, symptoms of NF1 can include tumors and glaucoma, in addition to bone malformations.
Malina's charity brainstorming has led to participating in annual walkathons, a 5K through Epcot Center, and hosting tea parties, her mom, Alicia, told The Huffington Post. The girl has received thousands in donations.
Her latest venture is creating earrings, which she sells for about $5. Half of the proceeds go to the Children's Tumor Foundation, and she spends much of the rest on supplies and to help a family friend with cancer.
She's raised $1,800 since starting her earring venture in July.
"She is an amazing 9-year-old with a heart of gold!" her mother said.
