Morehead City, N.C. Makes News After Port Shut Down (VIDEO)

Morehead City, N.C. is in the news today after the Morehead City port and Highway 70 were closed down in an explosion scare.

WSAV-3 reports that a construction vehicle accidentally punctured at least one container believed to contain highly explosive materials, causing the shutdown.

Some nine containers in all were damaged and people were instructed to evacuate the area, according to a Morehead City spokeswoman.

Morehead City is a coastal town, lying in Carteret County and with a population just under 10,000, and it is home to one of the deepest ports on the East coast.

Morehead City is well known for its rich maritime history and is home to several marine-research facilities.
