Though sexy Halloween costumes might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's certainly a woman's prerogative to wear one if she'd like to. So why are some women shamed for doing so?
HuffPost Live host Caitlyn Becker tackled this question in an Oct. 30 segment. The participants agreed that women should not be shamed for their costume choices -- and raised the point that "slutty" Halloween costumes are usually only a problem when men are around.
"I really think it's the issue of women tearing other women down, and participating in that," blogger LaTisha Conto said. "Because I honestly think -- if you get a room of women together -- they don't care if you're dressing sexy, or slutty, or cute, or in an oversized costume. When men come in, that's when women start to degrade each other."
Participants also discussed the fact that dressing up on Halloween can be liberating for women who might not normally be comfortable displaying their bodies in a certain way. Think Progress health editor Tara Culp-Ressler noted:
"Halloween has become, for many women, one of the only days of the year that they feel comfortable really having their sexuality on display, really being overtly sexual."
We think women should be able to wear whatever they like without being hassled -- so enough with the Halloween slut-shaming, no matter how peculiar the "sexy" costume is.
