This has evolved. Historically, the bride should pay for the bouquets and also give her 'maids a present to thank them for their efforts as bridesmaids. However, as weddings have gotten more intense and wedding photography more important, more brides want their girls to have their hair and makeup professionally done. I am of the opinion that should you want the girls to have professional hair and makeup to look better in YOUR wedding photos, then YOU, the bride, should be the one to cover that cost. Of course, they will feel great after getting their hair and makeup done, but the real motivation behind having it for everyone is typically for better aesthetic results in your photos. After all, the 'maids are on the hook for so much as it is: the dress, shoes, transportation, travel, lodging, the bridal shower, the bachelorette party and on and on. So this is one relatively small way to help defray the cost of being a bridesmaid and show how much you appreciate them.

Below, our readers debate who should cover the cost of the bridesmaids' dresses.
