Sad songs, to quote Elton John, "say so much." Let's face it - some of the best songs (that aren't love songs) often come from a very deep and dark place. Methinks it's easier to pen tunes about depressing stuff than tunes about bursting with fruit flavor. Let's focus on the latter. Two songs I'm currently playing out of style like a Sony Walkman are Kodaline's "High Hopes" and American Authors' "Best Day of My Life." These tracks, especially the latter, are filled with as much optimism as a rainbow and Kenneth on 30 Rock combined. It may be starting a trend. Speaking of which, Todd Carey's new track "Nintendo" is a love song, but in no way is it a touchy, feely, formulaic schmaltz-fest. The song is a golden pop nugget that finds the singer/songwriter breezing through countless old school references from He-Man to that game console whose cartridges threatened the lung capacity of many a kid back in the 1980s.

"Nintendo" is the first single off the Chicago-born, New York-based artist's upcoming full-length album, which should drop by early 2014 from Blaster Records. At an A-Sides session filmed at the Music Conservatory of Westchester in White Plains, NY last week, the musician discussed the track, the album, and how proud he is of both. Watch the infectious performance (with drummer Seth Faulk) and interview below, and be sure to fire up your old Konami games. Speaking of which, if you want 30 lives in Contra press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start at the Title screen. You're welcome.

About A-Sides Music
Jon Chattman's "A-Sides Music" series was established in August 2011 and usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles -- just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I'm hoping this is refreshing.
