'Asexuality: An Overview' By Julie Decker Explains A Frequently Misunderstood Identity

What Does It Mean To Be Asexual?

As we continue our celebration of Asexuality Awareness Week in conjunction with LGBT History Month, it is important that we take a moment to discuss and deconstruct what it actually mean to identify as asexual.

Julie Decker, also known as Swankivy, is an asexual activist and blogger who previously worked with HuffPost Gay Voices on a six-part series about asexuality. This in-depth analysis and first-hand perspective sought to "explore the history of the asexual movement, uncover current research on asexuality, debunk common misconceptions and discuss the challenges the asexual community faces."

"When people hear that you're asexual, some take that as a challenge," Decker previously told The Huffington Post. "We are perceived as not being fully human because sexual attraction and sexual relationships are seen as something alive, healthy people do. They think that you really want sex but just don't know it yet."

Check out the video above to learn more about what it means to be an asexual person, as well as some of the challenges the community faces.
