'The Fifth Estate' Flops With Year's Worst Opening Weekend

'The Fifth Estate' Is A Huge Flop

Here's a list of movies that had better opening weekends than Bill Condon's "The Fifth Estate" while also debuting on more than 1,500 screens: "Machete Kills," "Battle of the Year," "Movie 43," "Paranoia," "Getaway," "Dead Man Down" and "The Last Stand," among many, many others. With just $1.7 million in ticket sales since Friday night, "The Fifth Estate" now owns the ignominious title of worst wide-release opening of 2013.

Some more numbers: "The Fifth Estate" averaged just $969 per theater during its opening weekend, roughly $300 less per theater than the fourth weekend of "Baggage Claim"; "Enough Said," screening in 1,012 fewer venues, earned $86,000 more than Condon's Julian Assange film.

"We're disappointed with these results," Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis told THR in a statement about the opening weekend.

One person who wasn't unhappy, however, is Assange himself. Before "The Fifth Estate" debuted, Assange told The Hollywood Foreign Press Association that the film was "destined to be a box-office failure," a statement that makes him less a soothsayer and more of a realist: tracking for "The Fifth Estate" was poor (Variety noted that it was expected to earn just $4 million during its debut frame, which would have still ranked as one of the year's worst openings), and the reviews were weak as well.
