Democrat Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, has defeated Republican businessman Steve Lonegan to become New Jersey's next U.S. Senator.

Booker and Lonegan battled at the polls on Wednesday in a special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D), who died in June.
