World Animal Day 2013: A Time To Reflect On And Renew Conservation Efforts

Happy World Animal Day!

October 4 is a glorious day for all you animals lovers out there, because today is World Animal Day.

World Animal Day was first observed in 1931 at a convention for ecologists to bring attention to endangered or threatened species, according to a report by the Boston Globe.

Sadly, biodiversity has been steadily declining for decades and the number of threatened species has continued to rise, according to annual reports released by the IUCN. The event has evolved over the past 80 years as a time for humans to reflect on the animals around us, and to reconsider our impact on the planet and the steps we can take to save the creatures around us.

Because really, so many animals are worth saving.
