With about a month of campaigning left to go, Virginia Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli is attempting to set the record straight on women's issues.
In an interview with Post TV's "In Play" published Wednesday, Cuccinelli was asked if he needs to better explain his positions on issues like birth control and abortion to close a significant female voter gap seen in some polls. Cuccinelli replied that some of his stances are "quite simple."
"Take birth control, my opponent is flat out lying and he knows he’s lying,” Cuccinelli said in a response to a recent McAuliffe ad. “I do not support government playing a role in adults’ choices about contraception. Just don’t, period. Haven’t in the past, he would like to say that I have, but I haven’t. And I’m committing to not doing that in the future.”
Cuccinelli's claim arrives as Planned Parenthood announced Wednesday that it is taking a $1 million ad buy against him on women's issues. The clip accuses the attorney general of "intruding" on women's personal decisions, closing with "Cuccinelli doesn’t trust women, so how can we trust him to be governor?” (Watch the ad here).
HuffPost Pollster's latest compilation of 30 publicly available polls shows McAuliffe holding a six-point edge over Cuccinelli, 44 percent to 38 percent. Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis stands at eight percent.
