I have had the very good fortune to have my health insurance covered by employers my adult life. In fact, I have never had the need to shop for healthcare coverage. That is, until this morning!

At 8am I went to https://www.coveredca.com to do some window shopping. Just to look around.

I live in Los Angeles and that's California's on-line Health Insurance Exchange. It's the exchange I would likely use were I in need of health insurance.

I spent about 30 minutes reading the different plans from the various companies and here's my report:

• You will be amazed at how easy it is to compare plans, compare costs, compare benefits and best of all, you will see capitalism at work as insurers compete for your business.

• Prices seemed reasonable, fair and affordable. From a low of about $100 dollars a month for low end coverage for a single male... to $600 for an intermediate plan for a family of four.

• The details were very clear. Out of pocket costs? Clear. Co-pays? Clear. Cost of prescriptions? Clear. Maximum outlay? Clear.

It's like having Marcus Welby right there on your desk. Only, the internet isn't dead and a decaying corpse. At least not yet.

This is truly a great day for America. It's a great day for uninsured Americans. It's a great day for the healthcare system.

However -- It's a colossal failure of the Republican party in Washington that the government can't celebrate, due to being shut down.
