'Good Morning America' Tops 'Today' For First Season In Two Decades

'Good Morning America' Celebrates Historic Season Win

For the first time in two decades, "Good Morning America" has won the season in total viewers and viewers in the demo.

The network announced the win on Friday. "GMA" topped "Today," drawing 5.3 million total viewers and 1.97 million viewers ages 25-54 between September 2012 and September 2013. Meanwhile, "Today" drew 4.6 million total viewers and 1.9 million viewers in the demo.

It was a historic win for "Good Morning America," which last won in total viewers during the 1993-1994 season, and in the demo during the 1992-1993 season.

Friday's news is the latest development in the sea change in the morning show wars. "GMA" ended the "Today" show's sixteen-year streak as the country's number one morning show each week last spring. They traded back and forth for a few months, but "GMA" went on to dominate "Today" each week from November to June, and won May sweeps month earlier this year.
