'Parenthood' Season Premiere Ends With Surprise Proposal

As usual, there are a ton of things going on with the Bravermans on "Parenthood." With the Season 5 premiere, the family moved to its new Thursday night home. In it, Crosby became an overwhelmed dad to a new daughter. Kristina made a huge decision to run for mayor, rather than just try and help someone else get elected. But the biggest surprise was saved for the end.

Amber had been eager throughout the episode for Ryan to return from his deployment. When he was finally dismissed so she could run into his arms, Ryan instead dropped to one knee.

“Ryan? What are you doing?” she asked, stunned.

“Amber. Will you marry me?" Ryan asked.

“Oh my God. Yes, of course.”

Entertaiment Weekly's Shirley Li admitted that she needed a fistful of tissues for that scene. "Between her ‘yes’ and the double ‘yes’ from yesterday’s 'Modern Family,' ... well, let’s just say I’ve become a puddle of tears. Tears of joy.”

Showrunner Jason Katims told TVLine that the team behind the show is looking forward to telling the story of a young couple in love. “There are definitely things in Ryan’s past, and Amber’s past for that matter, that make it not be cut-and-dried that this is the right thing to do, and there are people in the family who start to question that and bring up those points," Katims said. "When you have people with very different opinions who are both right, who both have very good points, those always seem like the strongest stories for this kind of show.”

All the tears and laughter of "Parenthood" can now be found on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
