'Modern Family' Season 5 Premiere: Where We Left Off

Last Season, On 'Modern Family'...

As of Wednesday night, "Modern Family" is back in business. Mitch and Cam will get back to bickering, the Dunphy family will erupt into chaos once again and Gloria and Jay will resume their fabulous, unlikely relationship.

But before diving into the new season, take a few minutes to refresh yourself on what the "Modern Family" gang was up to when we last saw them in May.

1
Gloria Pritchett (Sofia Vergara)
ABC
Now a mother of two, Gloria faced a minor shake in confidence when her ex-husband Javier (Benjamin Bratt) brought his smart, funny new girlfriend Trish (Paget Brewster) over. It didn't help that Manny adored her. Luckily, Trish was quick to tell Gloria that she would never live up to her looks, and Gloria's self esteem was restored.
2
Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill)
ABC
He now has a newborn baby, one stepson, two grown children and four grandchildren. Perhaps his ever-growing family is responsible for softening Jay a bit, and when he ran into the woman who took his virginity in Vietnam, he was thrilled to catch up with her. Sadly, she didn't exactly remember him ...
3
Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez)
ABC
Always optimistic and romantic, Manny does his best to keep everyone in his life happy. When Jay told Gloria that he's always wanted to be a writer and she challenged him to write a book, Jay was at a loss. Luckily, Manny saved the day by writing it for him. Gloria didn't love it, but perhaps that's because she didn't know it was written by her precious Manny.
4
Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell)
ABC
Ever the comic, Phil showed off his sensitive side when his mother passed away in the season finale. While he spent most of the episode trying to stay strong, he finally broke down while talking to the woman his mother suggested his father date when she died. "She was always doing crazy stuff like this. Going out of her way to take care of us," he said tearfully.
5
Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen)
ABC
When Phil's mother passed away in the season finale and she suggested a new partner for his father, Claire's controlling ways took hold and she set out to make sure this woman knew she was meant to be with Phil's father. While Phil initially thought it was a horrible idea, he eventually gave in to the idea, thanks to his loving wife.
6
Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland)
ABC
Still a party girl at heart, Haley has noticeably calmed down. Dylan appears to be out of the picture, she's getting along better with her family, and although she got kicked out of school for underage drinking, the amount of community college brochures she received suggest she may have a bright academic future. Who'd have thunk?
7
Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter)
ABC
Although she spends most of her time studying, Alex managed to make an impression on not one, but two boys in Season 4. When they both kicked her to the curb, Haley came to the rescue with a few flirting tips ... and Alex actually took them into consideration.
8
Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould)
ABC
Being the youngest Dunphy isn't easy, and Luke is often an afterthought in his family. But when Luke admitted he was struggling academically last season, Alex kindly offered to tutor him.
9
Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet)
ABC
Although Cam and Mitch's relationship is stronger than ever, when Mitch's ex came back into the picture Cam felt a little threatened. But when Jay sat him down and told him that when Mitch met Cam he knew they were meant for each other, all his doubts disappeared.
10
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson)
ABC
Despite not having spent much time in the courtroom lately, Mitch was put back to work when Gloria asked him to defend her when she was accused of being involved with a prostitution ring in the season finale. Over the course the episode, Mitch managed to win not one, but two cases. Talk about a confidence boost!
11
Lily Pritchett-Tucker (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons)
ABC
When Lily gleefully told Gloria that she's gay, Cam and Mitch soon discovered that she was mistaking "gay" for her heritage. The gang took her out for Vietnamese food in hopes of getting her in touch with her heritage, but Lily explained that it's not her heritage she's missing out on ... she just wants to be able to relate to her dads a little more.

"Modern Family's" one-hour Season 5 premiere airs Wed., Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. In the meantime, Nolan Gould -- aka Luke Dunphy -- has taken over Huffpost TV's Instagram. Follow along here.
