Mom Says Son Couldn't Have Shot Girls Because 'He's Gay'

The mother of one of three men suspected of critically injuring two young girls said her son could not have committed the crime because "he's gay."

The Citizens' Voice reports that a "domestic dispute" at an apartment complex in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. lead to two girls, one aged 2 and 5, getting shot on Saturday.

The 2-year-old is in critical condition and the 5-year-old is in critical but stable condition. The Voice reports that police did not release any information on the cause or nature of the domestic dispute.

Jevaun D. Brown, 24, of Wilkes-Barre; Taleek T. Sistrunk, 21, of Wilkes-Barre and Trevor Whitaker, 26, of Brooklyn, N.Y. were taken into custody in connection with a fight that took place early on Saturday. Police said their connection to the shooting is "possible" but no charges were filed against the men in relation to the shooting.

Gawker reports that the mother of one of the suspects, whose name was not given, offered an unusual defense of her child to reporters.

"My son is innocent, he's gay," the woman said. "Gay people don't shoot kids. Certain men don't shoot kids."

We are not implying that her son committed any kind of violence, and it is certainly nice that this woman has such a positive view of gay people, but somehow this “stereotype” does not ring true to us.

And it certainly begs the question: will this be a new defense that can hold up in court? “Your honor, there’s no way I could’ve shot that man. I’m gay — look it up. I did, however, read him to death.”
