Morgan Spurlock, Director Of 'This Is Us,' Explains Why He Cut One Direction's Girlfriends Out Of Documentary (VIDEO)

Why One Direction's Girlfriends Were Cut From 'This Is Us'

Morgan Spurlock, the director of One Direction's new documentary, "This Is Us," stopped by HuffPost Live on Thursday to talk about his experience working with the world famous boy band. He also tackled a big question from fans (particularly now that Zayn Malik is engaged): "Why are their girlfriends not featured in the film?"

Spurlock admitted that he filmed a lot of footage with their girlfriends, but ultimately decided to cut it from the final version of the movie.

Here was my fear, and it happened while we were filming: you're 19-20 years old. You change your girlfriend like you change a pair of pants. My fear was that we were suddenly going to introduce a girlfriend, and then halfway through she's not a girlfriend any more. We'd have to close up a plot point that, ultimately, at the end of the day, isn't that important. Their relationship with each other and how they keep each other so grounded and focused I think is the better story.

Liam broke up with his girlfriend -- which is the exact reason I didn't want to put it in there. Here's this guy, who I think creates the most dynamic relationship conversation in the film, who is like, "I want somebody to love me for me." Now you're a multimillionaire pop star. Everyone knows who you are. You are world famous. How do you get somebody to suddenly see past that, and be like, "Oh, I just like that guy. What a nice guy he is." That is going to be impossible.

Directioners: What do you think? Would you have preferred for the girlfriends to have been included in "This Is Us"? Sound off in the comments or tweet @HuffPostTeen!
