Woman In Her 90s Gives Needy Kids $20,000 For Back-To-School Items

A Seattle woman in her 90s is helping a much younger generation get a head start this fall.

Jean Renny donated $20,000 to the Salvation Army so about 100 low-income kids could go on a back-to-school shopping spree, King 5 News reported. The children each got $200 to spend at J.C. Penney on Tuesday.

Many stocked up on classroom staples like pencils, notebooks and backpacks, King 5 footage above shows. But some kids desperately needed other basics, like footwear.

"There was a child today whose feet were hurting him because his shoes were three sizes too small. … [T]hat's the way he showed up and we see that over and over again," Lora Marini Baker, a Salvation Army spokeswoman, told The Christian Post.

Renny, a widow, did not have children and "is very interested in helping children," Baker said.

Though Renny was not able to attend because of health issues, the Post said she would receive a video of the event.

Her good deed ignited a pageful of well-wishers on the Salvation Army's Facebook wall. "Rock on Jean Renny!" one person wrote.
