Arkansas Christian Academy Arms Staff, Posts Gun Warning

Could This Sign Deter A Potential School Shooter?

Do you think this sign could deter a potential shooter?

A private school in Arkansas apparently hopes it will.

Reddit user Jmillerdude posted the above photo on Thursday afternoon with the caption “A private school in Central Arkansas recently voted to allow the staff to have guns on campus. This is the sign they put up.” His post had received more than 4,000 comments by Thursday evening.

The school in question is reportedly Arkansas Christian Academy, which previously posted armed guards at some of its Sunday services and recently decided to train and arm staff, according to local outlet KARK-TV.

"I just felt like with what's going on in many of the public sectors where there seems to be a lot of shootings we need to take the same stance that we do in church on Sunday for our kids Monday through Friday," Pastor Perry Black, an administrator at the school, told KARK.

While the Arkansas attorney general recently made clear that the state's public schools could not arm teachers, legislation allows for concealed weapons in private schools operated by a church. Black told KARK that staff started training to handle guns following the Newtown, Conn., shooting in December.

Redditors' opinions of the sign ranged from support to revulsion.

"I realize there are crazy people willing to go out in a hail of bullets for a little national attention. I also understand that there will always be a potential for some catastrophic incident. But then again, I could get hit by a school bus too. Are we really going to ask teachers to start taking on armed assailants?" wrote user Maligned-Instrument.

"It's better than having a 'gun free zone sign' which, to criminals, basically translates to 'This means that you have more time to shoot up the school before police arrive.'" commented user Robotyc.
