Former teen idol Leif Garrett has some advice for Justin Bieber: Do not believe your own publicity.
In the 1970s, Garrett was a child star riding the tidal wave of young success. But things eventually began to spiral downward, and he became better known for his drug abuse and legal woes than for his craft. Having been down the roads of both fame and failure, Garrett now has some wise words for Bieber, whose recent bad behavior has landed him in the headlines.
"Do not believe your own publicity," he said when asked what advice he has for the "Heartbreaker" singer during an interview with Fox News. "Sussing out who your real friends are is full-time work. Every scum bag, every drug dealer, every chicken hawk wants a piece of you."
"When you’ve got that sort of power at that young age, and everything at your doorstep, you put out that bad boy image," the 51-year-old continued. "At that age, testosterone, hormones, all of the money, you see what else you can get away with. He’s also doing a lot of charity work."
Brawls, drugs and naked photos are only some of the troublesome reasons the Biebs has been in the news.
Garrett is not the only celeb to try to offer Bieber some guidance. Mark Wahlberg told him to pull up his pants and stop smoking weed. Jon Bon Jovi called him an a**hole for being late to shows and told him to "go to f**king work."
Whether or not the pop superstar is listening remains unclear, and his mom can't tell him what to do anymore. Pattie Mallette opened up to People magazine about their relationship in an article published Sunday.
"A lot of people might think that I have my head in the sand or that I am oblivious to the things my son is doing," she said. "I know who my son is and I don't always agree with every single thing that he does but I don't necessarily have to address that with everyone else. He's my son and I have to respect he is not going to want me going around being 'that mom' talking about his behavior."
