WATCH: Spiritual Author Takes On One Of Life's Greatest Questions

Spiritual author don Miguel Ruiz has spent his life traveling the world and speaking to countless people about spiritual awareness. His book, The New York Times best seller The Four Agreements, has also helped many of its readers experience a profound shift on their spiritual path. So, when Ruiz sat down with Oprah for an interview on "Super Soul Sunday," she had to ask him about one of life's greatest questions.

"Who are we?" Oprah asks Ruiz. "Our life is about searching for that answer."

Ruiz's answer may surprise many. "I don't know what I am," he begins. "And it's not important."

Coming up with a single definition to answer this great question, for Ruiz, simply isn't possible. "I can say, 'Well, I'm a male. I'm a male human. I'm a medical doctor. I'm an author…' If I go to a religious point of view, I will say, 'I am a soul. I am a spirit.' If I go into science, I will say, 'I am energy. I am light,'" Ruiz tells Oprah. "But the truth is I have no idea what I am."

Ruiz uses an analogy with animals to further explain his point. "The dog doesn't know that it's a dog. The cat doesn't know that it's a cat," he says. "We call him 'dog.' We call him 'cat.'"

"They don't care," Oprah agrees.

"Exactly," Ruiz says. "Why should we care?"

So what should we care about? "I am here and I'm alive," Ruiz says. "That's enough."

"Super Soul Sunday" airs on Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.
