College Technology Etiquette Questions Answered (VIDEO)

WATCH: Should You Friend Your Professor On Facebook?

Freshman year of college is all about newfound freedom, but it also leaves students struggling to figure out what's appropriate and how to communicate with the professors who facilitate their success.

HuffPost Live's Caitlyn Becker got the scoop on technology etiquette for college students from Evan Selinger, an associate professor of philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology.

"Over the last couple of years things have really shifted," Selinger said. "When students come out of high school ... friending your professors is a big no-no, but in college it becomes ever murkier because professors are using Facebook for so many different reasons."

Even communicating with a professor for class-related purposes can raise questions, Selinger added.

"We have a huge debate in society in terms of how formal an e-mail should be, what is too formal, what's off putting," he said.
