Paula Patton's '2 Guns' Character's Fate Explained

Why [SPOILER] Dies In '2 Guns'

The following post contains spoilers about the ending to "2 Guns."

There are a lot of firearms in "2 Guns," but not a lot of women. In fact, Paula Patton -- a.k.a. the only actress with a substantial speaking role in the film -- doesn't even make it to the third act. Patton's Deb, a crooked DEA agent and the love interest of Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington), gets murdered by a drug kingpin just before the film's conclusion kicks into high gear.

"The trick was this: the love story is between Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington, and the minute you put her in the third act, she gets in the way of the two of them," producer Adam Siegel told HuffPost Entertainment about Deb's shocking exit. "So it was, 'Let's get her out of the movie.'"

That task fell on director Baltasar Kormakur, who also viewed the character's demise as an opportunity to keep the audience off balance heading into its home stretch.

"You know these guys are both undercover, so you can't hide that; but there are twists and turns," Kormakur said. "We play with that, because you don't see her getting shot. You hear the shot. Most of the audience is going to think, 'He didn't shoot her, he shot just by her ear.' Then Bobby comes home and she's fucking dead! You're not allowed to do that in Hollywood."

Except in the case of "2 Guns."
