Amid a crowded field of candidates to replace retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), one Republican appears to have separated himself from the pack with a wacky proposal involving Jesus and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
David Young, the longtime chief of staff for Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), appeared at Monday's Faith and Freedom Coalition event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Iowa Republican reports that when asked about the Christian "brotherhood," Young vowed that if elected to the U.S. Senate, he'd invite Schumer to share the good news of Jesus Christ.
Young's campaign website describes him as a man with the "knowledge, experience, and quick wit" to stand as a "formidable check and balance" on President Barack Obama and Democratic senators.
There’s not a grandstanding bone in his body; he’s even-keeled, thoughtful and even kind," the bio adds.
New York Magazine's Jonathan Chait summed up the move as a "certainly a shrewd approach," posing this hypothetical scenario:
What's more, if you're looking for Jews to win over, isn't Schumer a pretty heavy lift? He is probably the Jew-iest one of the bunch. Also, as a senator from New York, he has the least to gain politically from a high-profile repudiation of the Jewish faith and conversion to evangelical Christianity. Schumer is also a really good negotiator, and Young could walk out of the room having agreed to become a Jew.
