Police say a Florida man strangled his mother's dog, cut it up and boiled it, keeping the extra meat in the freezer for future meals, according to multiple reports.
Thomas Elliot Huggins, 25, was arrested Thursday night by Tampa police, who said they found the dog's ribs cooked in a pot and its head in the garbage when they arrived at the residence, NBC Miami reported Friday.
Huggins allegedly strangled the 6-month-old pit bull mutt before quartering it and storing some of it in the freezer, WFLA-TV reports. He faces charges of animal cruelty and is in jail on a $2,000 bond.
While eating dog is legal in 44 states, according to The Wall Street Journal, Florida's animal cruelty law states that anyone "who intentionally commits an act to any animal which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering ... is guilty of a felony of the third degree."
Although eating dog is taboo in the United States, it is more common in other countries, such as South Korea, where activists say about 1.2 million dogs are consumed every year, despite a 1984 city-wide ban in Seoul that calls the practice "repugnant."
