Supreme Court Decisions: Justices Pass On Gay Marriage, Voting Rights And Affirmative Action

The Supreme Court did not issue decisions Monday on gay marriage, voting rights or affirmative action. The next day for the justices to issue rulings is Thursday.

The court is first expected to issue a ruling in Fisher v. University of Texas, challenging the school's affirmative action policy. The court is then expected to decide Shelby County v. Holder, challenging Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Lastly, observers expect the court to rule on the constitutionality of California's gay marriage ban, Proposition 8, and the Defense of Marriage Act.

The court ruled Monday that Arizona cannot require voters to prove U.S. citizenship before registering to vote. The court also decided that a court can use silence against a defendant against him before Miranda rights are given.

SCOTUSBlog predicted that a gay marriage decision is most likely to come on June 26 or 27.
