PETA's Top Vegan Cities: Austin, Portland Top 2013 List (PHOTOS)

PETA has released its annual list of the top vegan-friendly cities in the United States. Coming in at number one? Austin, Texas.

The countdown includes some obvious choices including health-centric Seattle and Portland, a "mecca for all things vegan," the group writes. But there are a few stunners on the list like Chicago, creator of the deep-dish pizza, which is now home to a few dozen solid vegan offerings.

Vegan diets have grown in popularity over the past decade and about 2 percent of Americans identify themselves as such, according to a 2012 Gallup poll. Many studies say diets free of animal products do have noticeable health benefits, including lower rates of obesity and heart disease, but they can require more planning to ensure you get adequate nutrients.
