It turns out small businesses aren't just competing with other local companies for top talent, they're also competing with other cities, a new report from CardHub suggests.
The study looks at the 30 largest metropolitan areas around the country and ranks each city's small business work environment based on 10 criteria, including small business job growth, salaries for new hires, cost of living and stress index.
The cities at the top (and bottom) of the list may not be the ones you'd expect. Minneapolis and San Antonio, for example, beat out Los Angeles and Chicago for the top 10, and Detroit came in dead last out of all 30 cities.
In addition to overall rank, the report reveals some other interesting insights. New hires make the most money in Washington, D.C., San Francisco and New York, but apparently money isn’t everything: Of those three cities, only San Francisco made the top 10 on CardHub's list.
Meanwhile, Phoenix and Riverside, Calif., are among the cities with the fastest growing small business communities, according to the report, but that didn’t stop them from ranking among the bottom 10 for work environment.
The findings are especially relevant as small business hiring picks up and Americans show an increased willingness to move longer distances as the economy recovers.
