Bourbon Horchata: Rosa Mexicano Mexican Mixology Month Kicks Off

Now that the weather is heating up, all we want to drink are frozen beverages -- preferably with a little booze if it's been a particularly long day at the office.

Rosa Mexicano, the modern Mexican chain with locations in D.C., San Francisco, Miami, New York and other U.S. cities, is celebrating the start of summer with The Art of Mexican Mixology, a month-long drinks promotion running at restaurants nationwide through June 30.

Among the list of refreshing-sounding drinks -- Papaya-Pineapple Punch, Raspberry Lemonade, Mexican Mule -- there's one that immediately stands out: Frozen Bourbon Horchata.

This is only Rosa Mexicano's second frozen drink in its history (the first, its popular pomegranate margarita, has been on the menu since 1984).

Not familiar with horchata?

Horchatas, also called aquas de horchata are one of the most popular kinds of agua fresca. The original horchata was brought by Spanish colonists to Mexico from Valencia, Spain, where they make a drink by the same name with tiger nuts that have been soaked and blended with water and sweetened with sugar.

Rosa Mexicano's bourbon horchata is made with Buffalo Trace bourbon and house-made horchata, and served with a shot of bourbon on the side to top up the drink as you go.

It's a little heavy for dinner but on a summer afternoon with a side of chips and Rosa Mexicano's famous guacamole, made tableside? We'll drink to that.
