Santa Monica College Lockdown: Report Of Gunman On Campus, Other Schools Also On Lockdown (VIDEO, UPDATES)

'Suicidal' Student Arrested At College, Lockdown Lifted

Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, Calif. was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after police received a call of a gunman on campus, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Students were told to stay off of campus as police investigate the threat. John Adams Middle School and Will Rogers Elementary in Santa Monica were also placed on lockdown.

An unidentified male student described by police as suicidal was arrested on campus shortly after 9:30 a.m., CBS reports. It was unclear if he had a weapon in his possession.

Santa Monica College officials lifted the lockdown as of 9:42 am., the Santa Monica Mirror reports. “Campus Police have detained the student who made the threatening phone call to the college campus,” an email to the student body read. “All classes and activities should return to their regular schedule.”

The suspect, 19 years old, is believed to be connected to threats against at least six area schools, the Los Angeles Times reports. He was located on the SMC campus without a weapon.

It remains unclear if the threat against SMC was linked to a similar situation in Monterey Park, which is in east Los Angeles. Just before 8 a.m., a man called 911 and said he had a gun and was headed to a school campus in Monterey Park, KTLA reports. The call prompted a lockdown on all schools in Monterey Park. East LA College was evacuated, and classes were cancelled for the day, the AP reports.

In connection to the Monterey Park threat, police are looking for a black Chevy Tahoe, license plate 6JVW818, the LA Daily News reports.
