Petition Asks Hallmark To Celebrate Gay Parents On Mother's Day And Father's Day

Petition Wants Hallmark To Go Gay For Mother's Day

With Mother's Day right around the corner and Father's Day coming up, one online petition wants to make sure that same-sex parents get the appreciation they deserve.

A Change.org petition started by Kristiana Johnston, of Lexington, S.C., is asking Hallmark to create Mother's Day and Father's Day cards for same-sex parents. Johnston is the daughter of a same-sex couple. She describes the first time she gave her biological mom's partner a Mother's Day card and how special the moment was for both of them. This year, she not only wants to be able to send wishes to both her moms, but she also wants all children of same-sex couples to do the same.

"Having two moms or two dads doesn't make a family any less loving or special," Johnston's Change.org petition reads. "We laugh together. We cry together. And we celebrate together. I know it would mean so much to my moms -- and moms like mine all over America -- if Hallmark made cards celebrating families like ours."

The petition has since received over 1,200 signatures.

The Huffington Post reached out to Hallmark to see if the greeting card company has any plans to create cards specifically for same-sex parents. Alas, there is no agenda on the books just yet.

"Choosing a greeting card is usually about finding something that’s right for the individual being acknowledged and the relationship the card-giver shares with that person," Linda Odell of Hallmark Public Relations said in an emailed statement to HuffPost. "In our experience, that's true for Mother's and Father's Day, and we believe that among the 2,000 different cards available shoppers will be able to find one that is right for each of the individuals someone wishes to acknowledge on either of these days."

Odell added, "For those who want to send a single card to a couple, rather than a separate card to each individual parent, Hallmark offers options to personalize with your own words and photos from the greeting or photo card selection available on Hallmark.com."

Back in 2008, Hallmark rolled out same-sex marriage cards to celebrate the weddings of same-sex couples. The cards featured images like two tuxedos, overlapping hearts and intertwined flowers, according to the Associated Press. The messages -- like "Two hearts. One promise" -- were sweet and simple.

"It's our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can," a Hallmark spokesperson said at the time.

This Mother's Day, Google gave a nod to same-sex parents in its "Here's to the Moms" advertisement. The tear-jerker commercial includes all moms -- like two mothers welcoming their newborn and a mother hugging her son who just came out as gay. The New Yorker also celebrated same-sex parents by featuring an illustration of two moms on the cover this week's issue.
