First YouTube Video, 'Me At The Zoo,' Was Uploaded 8 Years Ago, On April 23

Something Monumental Happened On YouTube 8 Years Ago

The video is extremely unassuming. "So here we are, in front of the elephants," Jawed Karim, on camera, narrates. "The cool thing about these guys is that they have really really really long trunks." What makes this trip to the zoo more special than your weekend plans is that footage from it became fodder for the first YouTube video ever. It was uploaded to the nascent network, founded a few months earlier, on April 23, 2005 -- or eight years ago to the day on Tuesday. About a year later, that Jawed Karim, one the site's three co-founders, personally made $64 million after selling YouTube to Google in a $1.65 billion deal.
